Can Industry Build Community?

Univeristy of the Arts Professor Andrew Dahlgren was first introduced to mechanical knitting in Germany while taking an intensive technical course. He quickly immersed himself in the craft, and began experimenting with the idea of community-supported manufacturing. In this revealing talk, Dahlgren shares his journey as a designer-maker and explores the social, cultural, and economic impact of manufacturing to reveal how skilled production can be a catalyst for community building and personal development.

Andrew Dahlgren was introduced to mechanical knitting in 2010, and quickly immersed himself in the craft via an intensive eight-week technical course in Germany. Today, he operates his own mechanical knitting practice and collaborates with fashion designers, industrial designers and architects. Throughout his career, he’s explored the potential of community-supported manufacturing, mobile factories and skill-building.
