Rick is a sculptor, engineer, and co-founder of Urban Matter Inc.
Urban Matter Inc. is an interdisciplinary experience design studio that transforms environments into experiences through storytelling, data visualizations, and user participation.
After receiving his degree in Fine Arts from Oberlin College in 1996, Rick went on to broadcast television and filmmaking, working for public relations firm Burson-Marsteller where he worked for 4 years. Always interested in innovation and creative thinking, Rick moved on to Meaningful Machines in 2001, where he worked on a small, elite team of technologists developing artificial intelligence and distributed programming applications for the web. After working in a startup environment for 8 years, he left to do IT consulting and to work on Urban Matter.
As the co-founder of Urban Matter Inc, Rick has brought his hardware tinkering and creative programming skills to many projects. Rick’s role as the principal technologist at Urban Matter has involved creating technology and hardware-driven solutions that bring Urban Matter projects to life. This means that Rick is responsible for developing early engineering prototypes for all Urban Matter projects.
Rick creates interactive experiences using cutting-edge open source technologies in combination with innovative, and sustainable materials.
