Ben Olshin

Benjamin B. Olshin has a wide range of interests and areas of research including, the philosophy of design, the history of design, cross-cultural issues in design. His background is interdisciplinary, with a Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of science and technology. Unique skills include facility in six languages (English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese), experience teaching, consulting, and doing design work on three continents. Currently, Dr, Olshin teaches design history, Eastern and Western Philosophy, sociology of technology, and a graduate thesis course. He has also worked for an architectural design firm in Japan and a product design firm in Taiwan. His work has been published in Japan Architect. Dr. Olshin received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. (Classical studies and ancient history) from Williams College. His vision of product design in the future is a global one: designers working together to understand how culture affects design and design processes.
